South Western Railway (SWR) is a joint venture between FirstGroup and MTR Europe, two of the world’s leading train companies. With about 235 million passenger journeys a year, the South Western franchise operates 1,700 trains a day and 200 stations covers urban, suburban, regional and long-distance routes between London Waterloo and south western England, including Bristol, Exeter and Portsmouth. SWR has some of the busiest routes in the country, and operates from the UK’s largest terminal station London Waterloo. SWR wishes to be a market leader and since taking on the franchise in 2017 it is committed to provide better trains, smoother journey and efficient services to the customers.
The challenge in this project is to develop a new machine learning tool that can enable SWR to minimise delays, with the potential for significant positive impacts on SWR and its customers. The new tool will need to be capable of detecting when a delay is imminent and determining the optimum set of actions to quickly get trains, their crews and their passengers to their destinations, whilst minimising any delays.
The new capabilities to be established at SWR through this project will enable the company to increase its punctuality, offer more reliable services and reduce the costs of delays; savings which can be passed on to the customer.
This is an exciting opportunity open to a Master or Ph.D. level degree in either mathematics, computer science, engineering, or other related area. The post will provide the individual with an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the company’s innovation policy and the creation of a team to identify the opportunities offered by machine learning and artificial intelligence within SWR. The successful applicant will have graduated within the last 5 years and be able to demonstrate some previous successful experience in a relevant role. The success of this project could lead to the opportunity of a senior role in the proposed machine learning team.
