This is an exciting opportunity for a high quality, technically rigorous, commercially minded Chemical or Process Engineer who enjoys pushing boundaries and is familiar with high temperature processes. Our diverse team, working in partnership with Torftech R & D Ltd., is developing an entirely new and unique microwave heating-based platform processor technology with potential applications across a wide range of markets as diverse as minerals processing, steelmaking, nuclear, food, catalysis, waste processing and energy.
These applications have significant promise at small laboratory scale with over 2000 journal papers published annually by global researchers. However, few if any, practical applications of microwave technology exist at a commercial scale at temperatures higher than 200°C. You will be supported to work on the design and scale up of a platform technology to address the challenges of high temperature processing using microwaves including both pilot plant and industrial based work across a range of end users. If successful, the technology will enable enhanced precision and de-coupling of process gas and materials temperatures, opening a range of opportunity.
This position has a £5,500 dedicated training budget tailored towards your personal development. This post is jointly advertised in collaboration with our industrial partner, Torftech and will predominantly be based at their site in Thatcham, Berkshire. Whilst the early stages of the work are experimental and developmental, the aim is to create processors that can be commercialised in the medium term, an objective that the university and Torftech believe is attainable and the project is being run with an eye to this.

This full-time post is available immediately and will be offered on fixed-term basis for a period of 34 months. For the right candidate and subject to performance, on successful conclusion of the project, it is hoped that there will be an opportunity to continue working with Torftech if so desired. Current sales are global, so a willingness to travel and an interest in other peoples and cultures are essential, as are an ability to work in a team, pro-activity and a sound analytical approach to problem solving.
